Background Information
Ph.D.,Civil Engineering, Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, 1986
M.S., Civil Engineering, Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, 1982
B.S., Civil Engineering, Shiraz University, Iran, 1976
I was born and raised in Tehran, Iran, where I received my education through high school. I completed my Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Shiraz University in 1976, and subsequently achieved both my Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in the Department of Civil Engineering at Northwestern University. Dr. Mark S. Daskin was my MS thesis and PhD dissertation supervisor.
Before and during my graduate studies, I worked in a number of construction and consulting firms and the Ministry of Highways and Transportation in Iran. During my first year of graduate work, I worked part-time for the Traffic Institute at Northwestern University. I started my academic career as Post Doctoral Fellow, and later as a research Scientist, in the Department of Civil Engineering and the Transportation Center at Northwestern University right after graduation where I stayed until August 1987. I joined the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh in September 1987 as Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering and Transportation and stayed there for three years. I joined the faculty of the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Maryland in August 1990, and have been the Department Chairman since Fall 2003.
My research interests are in transportation network modeling, freight transportation and logistics, emergency response, dynamic fleet management, container transportation and mass transit operations. I enjoy teaching and interacting with students tremendously and especially like our once-a-semester faculty and staff versus students softball game! In my spare time, I like to read, watch movies, play soccer, do aerobics and ballroom dance.
